BASEBALL: Comets outlast Warriors in 15 innings
DICKINSON, N.D. – Mayville State won the first extra-inning game of the NSAA Baseball Tournament on Sunday, prevailing 3-2 over Waldorf University in 15 innings to extend its season.
The Comets and Warriors were locked in a 2-2 tie after seven innings and neither team could push across a run until the bottom of the 15
th inning. Adam Senden led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. With Carson Lundmark at the plate, it was another wild pitch that allowed Senden to score the winning run and advance Mayville State to Sunday night’s game.
Mayville State advances to another loser-out game Sunday night at 7 p.m. MDT against Dickinson State. Waldorf University ends its season with a 22-26 overall record.
Both teams had outfielders make diving catches in the late innings, saving the potential go-ahead run from scoring when the teams were knotted at 2-2.
Waldorf scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Matthew Ferreira plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, and then Atticus Smith scored on a Comet error in the fourth inning.
Mayville State tied the game with a pair of runs in the seventh innings. Anthony Villanueva’s RBI double made it 2-1, and then Adam Senden tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right-center.
Mayville State starter Derek Palmiere went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out four. Mayville State’s bullpen was dominant. Gunner Thompson (4 2/3 innings), Jack Patten (3 innings) and Ryan Froemke (2 innings) combined for 9 2/3 scoreless inning in relief and allowed just four total hits.
Zach Meyer started on the mound for Waldorf and went eight innings. The righthander gave up just five hits and two runs. He walked two and struck out five. Gunner Huffman pitched a scoreless innings, and Ryuya Kato gave the Warriors 5 1/3 innings before allowing the game-winning run.
Anthony Villanueva had two hits and an RBI for Mayville, and Ricky Marquez added a pair of hits as well.
Ryan Webster was 3-for-6 with a run for Waldorf, while Matthew Ferrerira, Anthony Hibl and Davis Churchman had two hits each.
