FOREST CITY, IA – The NAIA announced the Champions of Character Five-Star Award winners for 2022-23 school year and the Waldorf athletic department received Five-Star Gold distinction for the first time. Waldorf has received silver medal distinctions in 2021-22 and 2017-18.

“This award designation by the NAIA is a direct reflection of the commitment by our athletic department to the NAIA’s 5 core values of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship,” stated Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Campus Character Liaison Shawn Chaffin. “Our coaches and student-athletes exhibit these traits in an intention fashion that reflects well on our institution and sets a standard for us all to live up to on a daily basis.”

Waldorf was one of 62 NAIA institutions and the only North Star Athletic Association conference school to receive a gold medal distinction. The NSAA was also named as one of the top 20 Five-Star Conferences in the NAIA.

“It is a tremendous honor to reach the gold level of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative. We have wholeheartedly supported that program from the beginning, and it is nice to receive the recognition,” Athletic Director Chad Gassman said. “Our coaches, athletes, and staff work hard every day to be deserving of the gold. I tell them every day that it’s more than just a banner in the gym; we all have to live the core values every day.”

Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

The Waldorf football team kicks off the school year with the first home game of the fall on Saturday, August 26th at 6pm for Community Night against Briar Cliff.
