BASEBALL: Bellevue cruises in tourney opener
DICKINSON, N.D. – Top seed Bellevue University pounded out eight extra-base hits Saturday afternoon as the Bruins began their postseason run with a convincing 10-0 victory in the NSAA Baseball Tournament.
After earning the first-round bye on Friday, the Bruins cruised to a run-rule win Saturday against No. 5 seed Waldorf University, finishing it off in the seventh inning with a walk-off 2-run home run by Anthony Lind.
Bellevue (37-12) advances in the winner’s bracket and will face No. 3 seed Valley City State in a championship semifinal game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT. The winner of that game advances to the championship and will need to be beaten twice.
Waldorf (20-27) drops into a loser-out game and will play No. 2 seed Dakota State on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
Dustin Schorie went the distance for Bellevue, pitching a complete game shutout. The righthander scattered seven hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven over his seven innings on the mound.
The Bruins put up four runs in the third inning, two more runs in the fifth and then finished the game off with four runs in the seventh.
Bellevue had 10 total hits, which included four doubles, a triple and three home runs. Jake Lacey, Brendan Luther, Steven Elsner and Anthony Lind all had two hits each for the Bruins.
Waldorf finished with seven total hits, including two each by Robery Gurney, Peter Ordonio and Juan Jorge.
Zach Meyer took the loss after pitching five innings for Waldorf. The righthander gave up six hits and six runs, walked two and struck out three.
