BASEBALL: V-Hawks defeat Mayville State, 10-1
DICKINSON, N.D. – Viterbo University scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the V-Hawks stayed alive Saturday night at the NSAA Baseball Tournament.
The big first inning set the tone for Viterbo as they earned a 10-1 win over Mayville State in a loser-out game. Brandon Jaenke gave the V-Hawks 8.1 innings on the mound and struck out 15 Comet batters.
Viterbo (12-37) advances to play another loser-out game Sunday at 6 p.m. against the winner of Waldorf/Dakota State, which play Sunday morning.
Mayville State ends its season with a 13-39 record.
Kyle Sontag’s 2-run double capped off a 4-run, 4-hit top of the first inning for the V-Hawks. Another RBI double by Sontag in the fifth inning helped the V-Hawks take a 6-0 lead, and they put up another four runs in the sixth inning to go ahead 10-0.
Mayville State scored its only run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Anthony Villanueva.
Jaenke was dominant on the mound for Viterbo. He gave up just the three hits and one run while striking out 15. Adam Olson recorded the final two outs.
Gregor Farquharson started for Mayville State and took the loss, giving up eight hits and six runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Viterbo tallied 16 hits in the win. Ryan Mesa led the way with three hits, and Sontag was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Marcus Hornacek also had two doubles, and Brett Stuessel, Blake Warner and Chad Herrera all had two hits each.
Caleb Jamieson doubled and went 2-for-4 to lead Mayville’s offense, which was held to four total hits.
