Softball Viterbo (Wis.) remains alive in NSAA Softball Postseason Tournament

SOFTBALL: (5) V-Hawks eliminate (6) Warriors in NSAA Tournament

DICKINSON, N.D. – After trading a pair of 2-run production in the first two innings, the fifth-seeded Viterbo (Wis.) outscored sixth-seeded Waldorf (Iowa) 4-0 to stay alive in the North Star Athletic Association Softball Postseason Tournament Saturday at Bravera Field, hosted by Dickinson State (N.D.).

The V-Hawks (18-27 overall record) move on to play in another elimination game late Saturday, facing the loser of the 3 p.m. (MT) game between second-seeded Valley City State (N.D.) and third-seeded Dickinson State.  The Warriors ended their season at 13-30 overall record.

Viterbo opened with a 2-0 lead in the bottom first, capped by Marissa Carter-Olson’s RBI double.  Waldorf answered with two runs in the top second frame to tie the game at 2-2.

The V-Hawks produced two doubles in the bottom fourth, thanks to lead-off double by Brittney Slocum.  Courtney Denton added another double, scoring Slocum.  Denton later scored caused by WU’s wild pitch to extend their lead to 4-2.

Viterbo’s lead grew to 6-3 after a run scored in the bottom fifth and sixth innings.

The Warriors snapped their scoring drought in the top seventh inning with an RBI double from Brooke Hickey with two outs (VU led 6-3).

Morgan Fuhrer (W, 8-0) held WU to three hits in her complete game victory for Viterbo.

Carter-Olson and Denton each sparked the V-Hawks’ offensive attack with a double, single and an RBI.  Sydney Haakenson added a hit and an RBI.  Makayla Nortman, Channing Manske, Slocum, Megan Jardine, and Amanda Bogdonovich each had a hit.  VU collected 10 hits in the game.

Emily Muro went 2-of-2 at the plate for Waldorf.  Hickey had a double and an RBI.  Alyssa Banda added an RBI.

Alex Mathers (L, 4-10) recorded the setback after working for four-plus innings, giving up five runs (two unearned) on seven hits.  Maddie Daike tossed two innings in relief.
