Comets ends Viterbo (Wis.) season in NSAA softball loser's out game

DICKINSON, N.D. – Fourth-seeded Mayville State (N.D.) remained alive in the North Star Athletic Association softball postseason tournament late Saturday afternoon, eliminating No. 7 seed Viterbo (Wis.) by the score of 5-1.  The postseason tournament is being played at Sanford Sports Complex, hosted by Dickinson State (N.D.).

Mayville State (16-30 overall record) faces the winner of Saturday’s night No. 6 seed Waldorf (Iowa)-No. 2 seed Valley City State (N.D.) game.  That game will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. (MT).

Viterbo ended their season at 9-40 overall record.

The Comets scored a run in each of the first three innings, starting with an RBI single from Alyssa Avila.  The V-Hawks tied the game at 1-1 in the top second as Haleigh Zanoni drilled an RBI double to score Amanda Bogdonovich, who led off with a single.

Mackenzie Hughes added an RBI single as MSU regained their lead to 2-1 in the bottom second.  The Comets ballooned their lead to 3-1 after Autumn McGough’s RBI double in the bottom third.

Mayville State extended their lead to 6-1 after plating three runs in the bottom sixth, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from Hughes and NSAA’s Freshman Player-of-the-Year Lindsey Tulla.

Avila paced the Comets with three singles and an RBI.  Hughes added two hits and two RBIs.  Tulla and Elliott each had a hit and an RBI.

Courtney Boll (W, 7-13) tossed a complete game victory for the Comets.  She struck out nine VU’s batters and yielded one run on six hits. 

Bogdonovich led the V-Hawks with two singles and an RBI.  Makayla Nortman, Sydney Haakenson, Zanoni, and Alexis Watson each registered a hit.

The V-Hawks used four different pitchers in the game, with Delaney Ryan taking the defeat after tossing the first 1 2/3 innings.
