DICKINSON, N.D. – The 2023 North Star Athletic Association Outdoor Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships get underway Wednesday at Biesiot Activities Center (398 State Ave. N).  This year’s outdoor track & field championships are being hosted by Dickinson State (N.D.).

Seven NSAA members will compete in the conference championships – Bellevue (Neb.), Dakota State (S.D.), Dickinson State, Iowa Wesleyan, Valley City State (N.D.), Viterbo (Wis.), and Waldorf (Iowa).

Dickinson State (N.D.) had won five consecutive women’s team titles, while Dakota State (S.D.) captured the men’s title for the past three seasons.

Since the North Star was unable to complete the multi-events earlier this season, it will now be part of the three-day conference outdoor track & field meet.  The multi-events start on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. (Central Time)/4 p.m. (Mountain Time) with the men’s decathlon 100-meter dash, followed by the women’s heptathlon’s 100-meter hurdles.

The multi-events champions will be determined on the second day of the conference meet, with the first event starting at 11 a.m. (CT)/10 a.m. (MT) with the men’s 110-meter hurdles and women’s long jump.

The conference meet continues Thursday afternoon with a 5,000-meter race walk at 3 p.m. (CT)/2 p.m. (MT).  This event will not be scored towards to the team standings, but it would give an opportunity to produce national qualifying marks for the national championships in Marion, Ind., on May 24-26.

The field events get underway Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (MT) with the triple jump, hammer throw, and pole vault.  The sprints events will hold their prelims Thursday afternoon as well as long-distance events.

The third day wraps up the conference meet with numerous finals, starting with the field events at 11 a.m. (CT)/10 a.m. (MT) with the long jump, high jump, discus, and shot put.  The running events begin at 1 p.m. (CT)/12 p.m. (MT) with the 3000-meter steeplechase.

The North Star Athletic Association Champions of Character will be presented on Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. (CT)/1:45 p.m. (MT).  The conference meet concludes with the 4 x 400-meter relay at 4:30 p.m. (CT)/3:30 p.m. (MT), followed by the awards ceremony.

The top three performers in individual events at the NSAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as well as the top two teams in the relay events, will be recognized as All-Conference and receive medals at the conference meet.

The awards ceremony will present the postseason awards in Track Athlete-of-the-Meet, Field Athlete-of-the-Meet, Most Valuable Athlete, and Coach of the Year in each division (women’s and men’s).
